Beanbag Love

I read. I write. I talk about reading and writing. That is when I'm not driving kids somewhere or teaching them. Married, educated, domesticated. I really enjoy the friends I've met through a variety of different message boards and venues regarding reading and authors. I try to take a positive view when I write reviews but sometimes I can't. Those times are few and far between, but they do exist. I'm mostly an old softy, though. I think so anyway.

Susanna Clarke
Sixty-One Nails - Mike Shevdon Make this a three point five.

There were stretches where this book was absolutely engrossing and then there were stretches where I had to skim. It wasn't a book I was dying to get back to either, even if I'd been interrupted during one of the engrossing parts.

I think I didn't connect with either of the lead characters. The protagonist (it's told from the POV of the lead male) was absolutely TSTL at the beginning. And not because he was overwhelmed or uninformed, what he did was so stupid it went to wallbanger territory. He had a couple of those.

So when I got to the end I actually felt a bit of relief. Which is odd because, again, some sequences were definitely compelling. And then guess what happened ... I read the excerpt for the next book and it looks like I'll probably read that one. It was a good excerpt. Damn it.
